U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Polar Star’s information placard, showing when the cutter was built and dedicated, is mounted in the main passageway for all crewmembers and visitors to see, Jan. 5, 2017.
The Polar Star will be turning 41 years old this January, making it the oldest icebreaker in active service and the naval muscle for icebreaking operations, as part of the National Science Foundation-managed U.S. Antarctic Program.
