The Burrowing Owl, listed as a bird species of special concern, makes Travis Air Force Base, Calif., its home Jan. 13, 2017. It often perches near its hole; when approached too closely, it will bob up and down and finally dive into its burrow. The bird usually claims burrows that have been abandoned by squirrels, but is quite capable of digging its own. Recent reports show this small owl is declining in population in California. Travis is host to many kinds of wildlife, including threatened or endangered species. (U.S. Air Force photo/ Heide Couch)
