The invasive zebra mussels originated in Eurasia and are believed to have been brought to the Great Lakes in excess water on board shipping vessels. All instances of zebra mussel infestations in the U.S. are a result of aquatic “hitchhikers” aboard boats and ships, with the exception of the Millbrook Quarry in Virginia. Scientists believe they took over the quarry after scuba divers brought in the mussels with their gear.
