PACIFIC OCEAN (Feb. 2, 2017) – Amphibious assault ship USS America (LHA6) conducts weapons testing with the close-in weapons system (CIWS) as part of combat systems sea qualifications trials. CIWS is a defensive weapon used to protect the ship against low flying aircraft, small boats and swimmers.
