Marine recruit Jeff Van Cleave sits for a photo just before graduating boot camp at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego in 1986. “My time in the Marines helped mold my leadership style, and gave me insight to my goals,” Van Cleave said. “After some sound advice from my platoon commander [at 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment], I decided to become an officer.” Van Cleave, now a U.S. Army major, is the fire support coordinator for 1st Marine Division (Forward), in Helmand province, Afghanistan.
