KADENA AIR BASE, Okinawa, Japan – Participants of the Four Chaplains Run begin the course Feb. 3 on Kadena Air Base, Okinawa, Japan. Chaplains and other members of the military community on Okinawa memorialized the sacrifices of four Army chaplains aboard the U.S.A.T. Dorchester in 1941. When their ship was hit by a torpedo from a German U-boat, the chaplains organized the evacuation and gave up their life-jackets to their fellow service members. The chaplains linked arms and prayed together on the deck of the Dorchester until the ship was pulled under water. Due to their actions 230 service members made it off the ship alive.
