The Kajaki Dam is one of two hydroelectric dams located on the 715-mile long Helmand River, which flows southwestward across more than half of Afghanistan, before flowing north through Iran and emptying back into the Helmand swamps of Farah. For the Marines of India Battery, 3rd Battalion, 12th Marine Regiment, Regimental Combat Team 2, securing this vital piece of terrain is crucial to providing electricity to nearly a million Afghan homes, while irrigating more than 600,000 acres of otherwise arid land.
