The award recognizes an individual who demonstrates a high degree of professional skill while recovering from an in-flight failure or malfunction requiring an emergency landing. Abshier earned the award as a result for safely landing his CH-47 Chinook helicopter after a dual-engine failure during a deployment in Afghanistan, September 2014.
