Tire ruts, visible here in a vernal pond Feb. 13, 2017 at Travis Air Force Base, Calif., can destroy a sensitive ecosystem. These seasonal, temporary vernal pools are home to countless forms of wildlife, including the endangered vernal pool Fairy Shrimp.
