Lt. Gen. Lawrence Nicholson, commanding general of III Marine Expeditionary Force, returns a salute from Marines and Sailors with the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit on the flight deck of the USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD 6), in the Pacific Ocean, March 21, 2017. Nicholson visited the ship during the 31st MEU’s Certification Exercise, as a part of the MEU’s 17.1 Spring Patrol. As the Marine Corps’ only continuously forward deployed unit, the 31st MEU’s air-ground-logistics team provides a flexible force, ready to perform a wide range of military operations, from limited combat to humanitarian assistance operations, throughout the Asia-Pacific region.
