Thelma and Louise, a pair of captive female desert tortoises who live at the Tortoise Research and Captive Rearing Site and serve as ambassadors for educational programs conducted by Natural Resources and Environmental Affairs, munch on escarole in their enclosures at the head start facility aboard the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center, Twentynine Palms, Calif., April 5, 2017. Wild tortoises being raised at the head start facility pending release back in the wild when they are strong enough to withstand predators, eat natural vegetation in their enclosures. In March, 50 juvenile tortoises were released. (U.S. Marine Corps photo by Lance Cpl. Dave Flores)
