Approximately 200 soldiers with 1st Battalion, 138th Infantry Regiment of the Missouri Army National Guard and approximately 200 soldiers from five other National Guards are participating in Orient Shield XI at Kami-Furano, Japan, Nov. 2, through Nov. 11. Similar training between U.S. and Japanese forces has been taking place since 1997. The training reinforces the 1960 Treaty of Mutual Cooperation and Security, which was a binding agreement for both countries to support each other from enemy attack.
