Members of Program Executive Office Intelligence, Electronic Warfare & Sensor (PEO IEW&S) gather at the Perry Point Veterans Hospital to celebrate the Army's 242nd Birthday. Here, Maj. Gen. Kirk Vollmecke, right, speaks with Paul Williams, left, a 93-year-old Army veteran. Vollmecke, the PEO of PEO IEW&S, takes time to visit veterans often as possible. Williams suffered a traumatic head injury in a dynamite blast on the Pacific Ocean island of Saipan while building an airfield runway, before the mission was shifted to a strip on nearby Tinian island. The life-altering blast occurred as Williams was running to warn some nearby people about the imminent detonation, moments after he had left his position of safety to do so. Vollmecke quoted George Washington that day, saying "the willingness with which our young people are likely to serve in any war, no matter how justified, shall be directly proportional to how they perceive the veterans of earlier wars were treated and appreciated by their nation.” (U.S. Army Photo/John Higgins)
