Pfc. Joseph A. Callas, a mortarman with the 81 mm Mortar Platoon, Weapons Company, 1st Battalion, 5th Marines Regiment, punches a 81 mm mortar tube, preparing it prior to a mortar shoot at Range MP-2, Dec. 10. Weapons Company used the exercise to cross train the 60 mm mortar sections on the 81 mm mortar weapons system before the sections replace the 81 mm Platoon on deployment to Afghanistan. The shoot was part of the battalion’s field exercise and pre-deployment training for the mortarmen recently attached to 1/5. Callas, from Albuquerque, N.M., is one of the battalion’s new additions learning his trade.
