BETIO ISLAND, TARAWA ATOLL, KIRIBATI— Cpl. William Tuttle pours dirt into a sifter in an effort to assist in a World War II mass grave site excavation, June 13, 2017, in Betio Island, Tarawa Atoll, Kiribati. The dirt was taken near a burial site and will be sifted for bones, metal and other artifacts. The Marines and Sailors that assisted were unable to work with the fragile bones of the deceased, so they assisted with back-filling holes and transporting dirt. No photos of the remains were taken out of respect for the deceased and their families. Tuttle is a packaging specialist Combat Logistics Regiment 35, 3rd Marine Logistics Group, III Marine Expeditionary Force, and a Maynard, Massachusetts, native, currently deployed to Koa Moana 17.
