BAY OF BENGAL (July 14, 2017) U.S. Navy Aviation Boatswain's Mate (Equipment) 3rd Class Christian Smania, from Boise, Idaho, attaches a chain to an arresting gear wire on the flight deck aboard the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz (CVN 68), July 14, 2017, in the Bay of Bengal as part of Exercise Malabar. Malabar 2017 is the latest in a continuing series of exercises between the Indian navy, Japan Maritime Self Defense Force and U.S. Navy that has grown in scope and complexity over the years to address the variety of shared threats to maritime security in the Indo-Asia-Pacific region.
