Mostly buried beneath the ground, the nearly complete bio-gas plant as seen from the surface is illustrated in this panoramic. The bi-products of the plant will be methane and fertilizer. The methane will exit the plant through the pipe sticking out of the ground in the center-left of the picture. The fertilizer will be pushed out the back into the two troughs shown at the right. Four cement platforms in the center will be used to hold the solar water heater that will help keep the plant’s core temperature constant throughout the cold winter months. The bio-gas plant is expected to produce enough methane to illuminate a single mantel lantern for 24 hours, equivalent to about a 60-watt light bulb. The same amount of gas will provide three hours of operation for a propane-type burner…enough to cook a meal for an Afghan family.
