Marines with Echo Company, 4th Reconnaissance Battalion based in Joliet, Illinois await extraction from a Sikorsky SH-60 Seahawk helicopter for a Special Patrol Insertion/Extraction (SPIE) exercise at the Camp Grayling Joint Maneuver Training Center during Northern Strike 17, Aug. 7, 2017. The SPIE system was developed as a means to rapidly insert and/or extract a reconnaissance patrol from an area that does not permit a helicopter to land. SPIE has application for rough terrain as well as water inserts/extracts. It is an adaptation of the Vietnam War-era STABO rig. Northern Strike 17 is a National Guard Bureau-sponsored exercise uniting approximately 5,000 service members from 13 states and five coalition countries during the first two weeks of August 2017 at the Camp Grayling Joint Maneuver Training Center and the Alpena Combat Readiness Training Center, both located in northern Michigan and operated by the Michigan National Guard.
