Former Marine Sgt. Harold Berg, once a member of Company B, 1st Raider Battalion, stands next to the U.S. Marine Raiders Monument atop Edson’s Ridge, also known as Bloody Ridge and Raiders Ridge, Guadalcanal in the Solomon Islands, on Aug. 8, 2017. Berg fought atop Bloody Ridge nearly 75 years ago. The 1st Raider Battalion repulsed an Imperial Japanese Army’s 35th Infantry Brigade under Maj. Gen. Kiyotake Kawaguchi Sept. 12-14, 1942. Lt. Col. Merritt A. Edson, the commander of the 1st Raider Battalion, and also the namesake of the ridge, led the Marines against the 6,000 strong Japanese force. The combined Marine forces suffered more than 250 causalities, while the Japanese Army had a staggering 800 casualties during the two-day battle. (U.S. Army photo by Staff Sgt. Armando R.
