Shelters are constructed out of tree branches, an old parachute and snow. The soldiers dig out the snow to the ground level, build the structure and then cover it with several inches of snow for insulation and concealment. The soldiers are taught not only how to build them, but also how to utilize them in real world scenarios. This is one of the many survival skills soldiers learn during the Cold Weather Leaders Course offered by the Northern Warfare Training Center at the Black Rapids Training Site just south of Fort Greely, Alaska.
