Petty Officer 2nd Class Lammont T. Hammond, hospital corpsman, receives the Bronze Star Medal with Combat Distinguishing Device from Brig. Gen. John Love at U.S. Naval Hospital, Naples, Italy March 2 for his actions while assigned to Company B, 1st Battalion, 5th Marines, Regimental Combat Team 3, Marine Expeditionary Brigade. Hammond exposed himself to accurate enemy fire as he maneuvered more than 50 meters to a wounded Marine forward of his position. Hammond placed himself between the enemy and the casualty without regard for his own safety. He assisted in applying occlusive dressings to wounds, performed an emergency cricothyroidotomy and carried out CPR. After evacuating the Marine, he returned to the front where he retrieved another fallen Marine who had been struck by gunfire. Hammond displayed outstanding medical proficiency in the midst of an intense and sustained firefight.
