170907-N-PO203-010 GREENLAND (Sep. 7, 2017) Lt. Cmdr. John Woods, Office of Naval Research (ONR) Reserve Component, receives a weather brief from Staff Sgt. Daniel Davis of the 821st Operational Support Weather Squadron at Thule Air Force Base in Greenland, prior to a buoy deployment mission over the High Arctic near the North Pole. The Air Expendable Ice Beacons (AXIB) buoys were deployed from a Royal Danish Air Force C-130 aircraft as part of the International Arctic Buoy Program (IABP). The IABP is a conglomeration of global participants that maintain a network of drifting buoys in the Arctic Ocean that provide meteorological and oceanographic data for real-time operational requirements and research purposes.
