Maj. Andrew Bauer, 2nd Civil Affairs Group detachment commander, Force Headquarters Group, Marine Forces Reserve, explains the format of the unit’s upcoming briefs to its commanding officer, Col. Michael Griffin, during a three day exercise through the Shenandoah Valley Battlefields, Va., on Sept. 9, 2017. The Marines conducted a civil reconnaissance of a number of sites in Winchester ,Va., collecting information on the city’s inhabitants, infrastructure and resources in order to brief their commanding officer on the civil considerations involved in General Sheridan’s occupation of that city during his 1864 Shenandoah Valley campaign.
