Airman Daniel Moreno, aviation boatswain’s mate, directs a CH-46E Sea Knight helicopter to take off from the flight deck of the forward-deployed amphibious assault ship USS Essex. Essex, the amphibious dock landing ships USS Harpers Ferry and USS Germantown, with the embarked 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit, are off the coast of Akita Prefecture, Japan, in support of Operation Tomodachi.
