Lance Cpl. Nicholas R. Beaupre, civil affairs, Humanitarian Assistance Survey Team, Joint Support Forces Japan, uses a chime here March 28 to check his current location using the devices global-positioning-system capabilities. The device also has a satellite uplink and graphical-user-interface to allow Marines to fill out site surveys and communicate them back to the command element. The site surveys serve as a real time situation report on damaged infrastructure and buildings allowing the command element to better coordinate humanitarian assistance and disaster relief efforts.
