ARABIAN GULF (Oct. 2, 2017) Sailors assigned to the honor detail aboard the Ticonderoga-class guided-missile cruiser USS Vella Gulf (CG 72) bow their heads for the benediction of the change of command ceremony during which Capt. Rob Thompson relieved Capt. Mark Oberley as commanding officer of the ship. Vella Gulf is deployed to the U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations in support of maritime security operations designed to reassure allies and partners, and preserve the freedom of navigation and the free flow of commerce in the region.
