Vince McGowan, Friends of the Vietnam Veterans Plaza board member, said that when creating this memorial plaza they wanted to include the most comprehensive battle map from the Vietnam war. On March 30, 1973, the United States Armed Forces completed the withdrawal of combat units and combat support units from South Vietnam. In 2011, the U.S. Senate passed a resolution making March 30th 'Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day.' For the last 38 years Vietnam veterans have been fighting for recognition and respect.
