The dam has prevented an estimated more than $726 million in damages to downstream communities since being completed in 1942, and through a partnership between Broome County Department of Parks and Recreation and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, its reservoir is very popular for recreation as well, seeing more than 115,000 visitors annually.
