This 1959 photograph shows Whitney Point Lake when the concept of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers operating the Whitney Point Dam for recreational benefits in addition to flood risk management was initially being discussed. The A notes the dam itself, B is a proposed swimming area and C is a proposed picnic area. Since the 1960s, recreation has been a benefit of Whitney Point Dam and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers works closely with the Broome County Department of Parks and Recreation, who manages the recreational facilities associated with the lake.
