Michael Styskal, the regiment’s commanding officer to celebrate Bougainville Day, Marine Corps Base Hawaii, Nov. 1, 2017. Bougainville Day is the 75th Anniversary of the unit and 74th anniversary of the Battle of Bougainville. The battle happened on Nov. 1, 1943, when 3rd Marines landed at Empress Augusta Bay, Bougainville, to establish a beachhead, fending off thousands of Imperial Japanese soldiers.
