SAN DIEGO (Nov. 9, 2017) —Capt. Mark A. Melson, outgoing commanding officer of the amphibious assault ship USS Makin Island (LHD 8) receives the Legion of Merit from Rear Adm. Sean S. Buck, commander, U.S. Naval Forces Southern Command/U.S. 4th Fleet, during a change of command ceremony at Naval Air Station North Island. Makin Island is in dry dock at General Dynamics National Steel and Shipbuilding Company (NASSCO) for a depot-level maintenance availability.
