Capt George Brown and Maj Alexis Piet, both with 2D Civil Affairs Group (2D CAG), presented a paper authored by 2D CAG’s G-9 section at the Civil Affairs Association Symposium in Rosemont, Illinois on November 3, 2017. The paper, Planners and Operators: Civil Affairs Forces Relevant to the Future Operating Environment, was co-authored by the Marines of 2D CAG’s G-9, and argued that if the Joint Force recruits the right personnel and cultivates the right skills, Civil Affairs forces will become more relevant to commanders in future conflicts and operations. The 2D CAG paper placed second out of the five submissions the Civil Affairs Association reviewed at the Symposium.
2D CAG is a subordinate unit of Force Headquarters Group (FHG). 2D CAG, along with its sister units of 1st, 3D, and 4th CAG, provides an enabling function to combatant commanders by planning and conducting civil-military operations in support of the commander’s objectives. 2D CAG supports II Marine Expeditionary Force (II MEF) and the 2nd Marine Expeditionary Brigade (2nd MEB), as well as those commands’ subordinate units.
