Staff Sgt. Christopher J. Montgomery currently serves as a senior drill instructor with Golf Company, 2nd Recruit Training Battalion, at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, S.C. Montgomery joined the Marine Corps in April, 2007, and became a drill instructor in July 2016. “The Marine Corps gave me so many opportunities in life, plus the tools I needed to provide for my family, so I wanted to give back to the institution that gave so much to me,” said Montgomery, a 29-year-old native of Ocean City, Md. “So far the most memorable moment was my first Eagle, Globe and Anchor ceremony as a DI and I saw the emotion of the recruits as they became Marines. Being a drill instructor demands a constant commitment and time away from your family, but it is always worth it in the end. And now as a senior drill instructor I get to take a step back, and become a mentor not only to the recruits, but the drill instructors under me.” About 600 Marine Corps drill instructors shape the approximately 19,000 recruits who come to Parris Island annually into basic United States Marines. Parris Island is home to entry-level enlisted training for approximately 49 percent of male recruits and 100 percent of female recruits in the Marine Corps. (Photo composite by Cpl. Joseph Jacob)
