(Right to left) Dr. William Astley, U.S. Strategic Command (USSTRATCOM) resiliency coordinator, poses for a photo with his wife, Susanne; his son, Adam; and his daughter, Ariana, before his retirement ceremony at Offutt Air Force Base, Neb., Nov. 30, 2017. Astley retired after 36-plus years of service as an Air Force officer and government civilian. Dr. and Mrs. Astley’s other son, Abel (who lives in Huntington Beach, Calif.), was not present for the photo. Throughout his 11 years with USSTRATCOM, Astley led a team that developed several programs and activities to ensure members of the command remain sharp, fresh and productive. One of nine Department of Defense unified combatant commands, USSTRATCOM has global responsibilities assigned through the Unified Command Plan that include strategic deterrence, nuclear operations, space operations, joint electromagnetic spectrum operations, global strike, missile defense, and analysis and targeting.
