First Lt. (P) Joseph Sparks, 131st Cavalry from Enterprise, Ala., responds to a question from TaMarcus Pruitt’s Social Study 6 class at Hillcrest Middle School in Tuscaloosa, Ala. “Why does it look like the flag is flying backward?” asked one of the students. Sparks explained that the flag is facing to the observer’s right, and gives the effect of the flag flying in the breeze as the wearer moves forward. Sparks received the invitation to attend show and tell from Ashley Lowery’s daughter. Lowery volunteered to give free haircuts for soldiers responding to the April 27 tornado in Tuscaloosa. Sparks was pleased to accept the invitation. “I wanted to give something back, the people of Tuscaloosa are very supportive,” said Sparks.
