Shaun Carlson, a physical therapist at the Intrepid Spirit on Fort Bragg, N.C., smiles for a portrait, Dec. 11, 2017. Carlson grew up in a military family and said he has been fascinated by rehabilitation and sports medicine since he was a teenager, when his father went through a bout of rehab. After Carlson’s father was killed in action in 2003, he decided to pursue a career in physical therapy working with the military. This decision ultimately led Carlson to treat patients with traumatic brain injuries and associated conditions at the Intrepid Spirit.
