U.S. Marine Corps Col. Keven Matthews, Commanding Officer of 8th Marine Corps Recruiting District, and SgtMaj. Troy Nicks, SgtMaj. of 8th Marine Corps Recruiting District, present a Purple Heart to Ret. Cpl. Shelby S. Dawson for his action in the battle of Guam on July 26, 1944. The original Purple Heart, designated as the Badge of Military Merit, was established by George Washington, Commander in Chief of the Continental Army, on August 7, 1782.
