NORFOLK, Va. (June 24, 2017) -- Lt. John "Jack" Curran, from Silver Spring, Maryland, a deck division officer aboard the future USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78), and family smile after their son was baptized by Lt. Jamal Scarlett (left), from Murrieta, California, a chaplain aboard Ford (CVN 78), for the first baptism aboard Ford. The custom of baptizing infants aboard ships dates back to the British Royal Navy in which the infant is baptized under or inside the ship's bell.
