United States Marine Corps recruits of Golf Company, 2nd Recruit Training Battalion, put on protection gear as they prepare to begin body sparring during the Crucible Jan. 26, 2018, on Parris Island, S.C. During the Crucible, recruit training’s 54-hour culminating event, recruits are assessed on their perseverance and teamwork, some of which is tested through the Marine Corps Martial Arts Program. Golf Company is scheduled to graduate Feb. 2, 2018. Parris Island has been the site of Marine Corps recruit training since Nov. 1, 1915. Today, approximately 19,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 12 weeks of rigorous, transformative training.
