A U.S. Air Force KC-135 Stratotanker pilot, assigned to the 340th Expeditionary Air Refueling Squadron Detachment 1, performs a pre-flight checklist before take-off at Kandahar Airfield, Afghanistan Jan. 31, 2018. The purpose of a pre-flight checklist is to ensure the aircraft and all of its various systems are in good working order to fly and carry out its mission. Since standing up in September 2017, the 340th EARS Det. 1 has flown more than 600 missions in support of Operation Freedom's Sentinel and the NATO Resolute Support mission.
