Howard Havlichek is a WWII-era veteran who enlisted in the Army Oct. 3, 1946 before transitioning into the Army Air Corps the following year. During his time in service, Havlichek was a crew chief who worked on P-51s, which were later upgraded to the F-82E Twin Mustangs. Havlicheck said his unit performed a lot of escort duty for the Berlin airlift. He was honored during a Basic Military Training graduation at Lackland’s parade grounds Feb. 9, 1018, and visited the static display of an F-82E Twin Mustang before being shown around the 149th Fighter Wing’s Operations Group by his neighbor and friend, Senior Master Sgt. Aaron Hartzler, who wanted a way to show his appreciation to the former service member. (Air National Guard photo by Tech. Sgt. Mindy Bloem)
