San Juan, Puerto Rico, March 14, 2018 – The limestone Fortín de San Gerónimo, a four-cannon defensive battery that was first constructed in the 17th century (1609) at the reqeust of Governor Don Gabriel de Rojas to protect San Juan from enemy vessels. The Council of Nautical Archaeology of the Puerto Rico Institute of Culture and members of the U.S. National Park Service inspected the historic fort that was impacted by Hurricane María on September 20, 2017.
