PATROL BASE FAHEEM, Helmand province, Afghanistan - Sgt. Jacob P. Nelson, a squad leader for 3rd Platoon, Company B, 1st Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, shakes hands and shares a laugh with the children on a reconnaissance patrol near Patrol Base Faheem, June 26. The Marines of 3rd Platoon recently established and occupied the patrol base, extending the battalion’s ability to limit the enemy’s movement north of Sangin and provide a presence in the area. “When we come up here and patrol out of Faheem we show the enemy that we own this area,” said Nelson. “We don’t have to fight every time to get to this point and can be more effective in our patrolling efforts.” Nelson, 27, is from San Diego and graduated from Waukasha North High School in 2002.
