Vietnam-era landing mat were used to construct the primary pedestrian barrier in San Diego’s Border Infrastructure System. Without the ability to see through it, landing mat barrier creates agent safety concerns. It’s also easily breached and under-dug. DHS’s FY 2017 Enacted Appropriations provided funding to replace 14 miles of this legacy primary pedestrian barrier with steel bollard wall.
