PATROL BASE FAHEEM, Helmand province, Afghanistan - Lance Cpl. Christopher M. Miles, a machine gunner for 3rd Platoon, Company B, 1st Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, speaks about the life of his friend Lance Cpl. John F. Farias during a joint memorial service at Patrol Base Faheem, July 8. The Marines of 1/5 celebrated the lives, services and sacrifices of Farias and Cpl. Gurpreet Singh, who were killed in action while conducting combat operations against enemy forces in the Northern Sangin Green Zone. “I know everyone here misses him as much as I do, and would do anything to bring him back. But we can’t bring him back,” said Miles. “So we honor and remember not how he fell, but how he lived.” Farias, 20, was from New Braunfels, Texas, and graduated from Canyon High School in 2009 before enlisting in the Marine Corps.
