Jose “Freddie” Ruiz, Warrior Transition Battalion, salutes with 249 soldiers from 1st Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, at a welcome home ceremony June 15 inside the Special Events Center. Ruiz deployed to Afghanistan with 1st Battalion, 66th Armor Regiment, but a blast on Sept. 16 from an improvised-explosive device in Kandahar resulted in his quick medevac.
