The satellite was part of a communication flyaway kit, which is a network setup that provides an immediate communication capability in remote locations. Fanning is stationed at Aviano Air Force Base, Italy and is a native of Las Vegas, Nevada. Monroe is stationed at Shaw AFB, South Carolina, and is a native of Augusta, Georgia.
