Concord, Mass. – Nearly 1,000 service members, veterans, and civilians step off on a 26.2 mile trek through Minuteman National Historical Park, here, April 14, 2018.
Brig. Gen. Mark Merlino, Assistant Adjutant General of the Massachusetts National Guard, Brig. Gen. (Ret.) Thomas J. Sellars, Col. Paul Minor, Chaplain of the Massachusetts National Guard, and Master Sgt. Bernard Madore all spoke to the mass of participants before the event began.
Participants carry yellow ribbons bearing the names of fallen service members, police officers, firefighters, and emergency medical technicians on their rucks.
Every yellow ribbon represents a fallen comrade. Whether they died in battle or by suicide, it is an honor to remember them and be able to carry their names along the route, Merlino said when addressing the crowd.
