Australian army Maj. Gen.l Rick Burr, commander of 1st Division, and Lt. Gen. Ash Power, commander of Joint Operations, discuss the impending airborne insertion of U.S. troops into Drop Zone Kapyong as part of Talisman Sabre 2011. U.S. airborne troops from the 1st Battalion, 501st Infantry Regiment, based at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska, parachuted into Drop Zone Kapyong in Shoalwater Bay Training Area July 17, 2011. A task force of around 300 U.S. soldiers dropped in on Talisman Sabre 2011 July 17 for the drop. The task force had flown to the Shoalwater Bay Training Area directly from Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska, on four C-17 Globemaster transport aircraft. Seven members from the 3rd Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment, also took part. The seven Australians joined the task force in flying directly from Alaska to simulate the forced airborne insertion of troops into a conflict zone. TS11 is designed to improve United States and Australian combat training, readiness and interoperability. (Photo by: ADF Sgt. W. Guthrie, 1st Joint Public Affairs Unit)
