PORTLAND, Ore. (April 21, 2018) Vice Adm. Dixon Smith, Deputy Chief of Naval Operations, salutes Capt. J. R. Hill, commanding officer, at the USS Portland (LPD 27) commissioning ceremony, April 21. Portland is the U.S. Navy's 11th San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock ship. It is the third ship to bear the name USS Portland, however it is the first ship to be named solely for Oregon's largest city.
